Cecily Guarrera began studying art as a specialist subject while training to become a teacher in Johannesburg and has made it a lifelong study. She is now in her third decade of producing and teaching art to all manner of audience as a vehicle for teaching creative thinking skills. She has always viewed art as one of the best tools for generating reflective thought and creative problem solving and has woven it as a thinking tool into everything she has ever done. In recent years she has brought art into work as a team performance consultant to serve as a pattern-interrupting tool. “When people create a simple artwork with their hands, there can be no pretense. People express their perceptions and see the art produced by others through ‘fresh eyes’. This is a great starting point for introducing thoughtful change.”
Her own work is an extension of her current reflections of life and work. She says, “What we live is the reality we create. What I paint is a reality in that moment of my perception and so I try to put thought provoking messages out there in the form of painted image. I think art has the impact of a good question in visual form. Art is a way of interrupting our usual pattern of thought, which by its very nature provokes curiosity, questioning and change.”
She usually produces approximately 10 paintings a year and has had many solo and group exhibitions. Each painting she produces is composed of many layers, each new layer leaving a little of the one before visible as a metaphor of the layers of our lives that we create by building on previous experience and learning. The raw energy of the lines and the mixed textures are reflective of her personality which is constantly driven to take affirmative action and which finds ultimate joy in the freedom of positive expression.
